84 Days In Japan

Day #14: The Oldest Zoo In Japan

I decided to make the best out of beautiful weather that has visited Tokyo today and made my way to Ueno Zoo.

For the price of 600 yen per adult (bargain) you can admire over 460 species living in this 35-acre zoo. Seeing them all on it’s own will easily take up your entire day. There are also great food & beverage areas where you can enjoy some tummy-filling hot and cold snacks and drinks.

The zoo is nothing alike that I have ever seen. Usually they are either freaking expensive or miss plenty animals in their designated areas. You know, you start looking around in a cage to track down an animal only to find out it’s not there, because… god knows. Feels cheated, huh?

Not in Ueno Zoo. All animals are present, looking healthy and active, so surfing through exhibitions is a pleasant and fun experience for adults and kids.

I won’t go through all animals living there, but the most attractive ones are: giant pandas (Japan love these fellas), elephants, gorillas, tigers, polar bears, giraffes and crocodiles. If you look closer you will discover smaller animals, which you will surely be seeing for the first time.

It is divided into 63 main sections grouped into such categories as the Gorilla and Tiger’s Forest, Japanese Animals, The Children’s Zoo (with animal petting area), Animals of Africa, a Birdhouse, and the Vivarium (turtles and reptiles).

I strongly recommend to find a day and visit Ueno Zoo during your stay in Japan.

As always, I will leave you with some pictures 🙂
