Taketomi is the closest small island to Ishigaki. It takes literally 15 minutes by a speedboat to get there and enjoy it’s magical ambience.
There is a village centre full of picturesque houses, gardens and local shops. Apparently there is no council on the Island and public services as such, so habitants are responsible for keeping narrow lanes around their houses clean and available at all times. It’s impossible to rent a car, but there are a few bike rentals places with reasonable prices.
I walked across the entire island from the port to the most beautiful beach in 25 minutes, so imagine how small it is!
The Kondoi beach that I arrived at seemed like an excellent spot to lay down and relax. It’s turquoise waters are very shallow, so it was a bit difficult to freely swim, however just being dipped above the shoulders was a great pleasure.
Just a 5 minutes walk further was located a beach famous for star-shaped sand. You could tell you found the spot, because of all those people picking up grains from the sand. It’s a nice idea to collect those in a jar and keep it as a souvenir.
Due to the convenience of the transport and small territory, the place was a fantastic one-day trip.
